Christine Waller Enjoys the Relaxed Pace of Mexico
Christine Waller recently travelled with the entire Waller brigade to the seaside town of Playa del Carmen in Mexico, which is becoming a very trendy spot on the Yacatan Peninsula.
The town is ideally located close to an international airport, but far enough south to feel like you’re getting away from all the hustle and bustle of city life. The first thing you have to do when you get here is wind down, relax... and kick back. Get in vacation mode. The slow pace of Mexico means that you never feel like you have to do things all the time. Just strolling around town, eating good food and drinking a delightful Mai Thai is enough excitement for a part of your vacation, at least. Luckily Mother Nature provided Playa with the best possible set-up for relaxing – the beach!
The beaches here are beautiful and perfect for a dip in the blue waters anytime of the day, along with plenty of other water sports and of course many massage opportunities. The reefs are magnificent, and offer diving and snorkelling close by. Look for rays, moray eels, sea turtles and a huge variety of corals. The lavender fans make for picturesque vistas.
Christine and her family stayed at the Gran Porto Real (pictured), which is a family friendly resort in great location right on the beach. The resort is all inclusive – meaning all breakfasts, lunch and dinners are part of the package, with 24 hour snacks available including drinks, including alcohol! This is a great option as everything is pre-paid and there is no need to carry money around.
For those that prefer to lounge around the pool all day, the resort has a massive beach side pool that is uncrowded with music and games throughout the day. The pirates themed kids club includes mini golf, cooking, arts and crafts, and shows.
Fifth Avenue is only two blocks away, and it’s the perfect place to get your shopping fix. Whether you are looking for bargains or top brand names you will find it all here, plus there are many bars and restaurants nearby. But the restaurant at the Gran Porto Real Hotel serves high quality and delicious food including Mexican, Italian and a mixed buffet too. So you don’t have to eat anywhere else really.
A day trip to Chichen Itza is a must. It is the remains of the Mayan civilization who lived around 600 – 900 AD and one of the 7 man-made wonders of the world. The most recognisable structure here is the Temple of Kukulkan (pictured), also known as El Castillo. This glorious step pyramid demonstrates the accuracy and importance of Maya astronomy— The Maya’s astronomical skills were so advanced they could even predict solar eclipses, and an impressive and sophisticated observatory structure remains on the site today. It is located in Yukatan a 2.5 hour drive from Playa del Carmen.
Most day tours will also include a stop to stretch the legs in a local village where you can try some traditional food and you might be lucky enough to swim in a beautiful sink hole
